Jazz music is becoming quite popular these days owing to its rhythm and its stirring beats. However, only a few people are aware of the history and origin of jazz.
Believed to have originated in New Orleans, jazz music soon spread to Chicago, Kansas City, New York City and then the West Coast area.
Instruments and vocals, both form an integral part of jazz music. The first type of jazz that came into existence was Dixieland jazz in New Orleans, followed by swing jazz or bebop or bop. Then came progressive or cool jazz which was accepted by the neo-pop or hard bop.
Jazz music originated in the 19th century and is actually based on the blacks’ work songs, shouts as well as their sacred hymns and sad songs.
It was in Europe that jazz gained more popularity, resulting in the migration of jazz artists from America to Europe. White orchestras adapted jazz and since then on, its popularity has been increasing. Benny Goodman initiated the concept of both black and white jazz concert, by performing in the Carnegie hall in the late 1930’s for both blacks and whites. And that was when jazz was established as a legal entertainment.
