James Bond & the Gambling World (Casino Royale & Moonraker book)

Before I roll into James Bond mode, I’d like to provide Bond fans with the latest scoop on work on Daniel Craig’s 3rd rendition as the secret agent. The 23rd Bond flick has been indefinitely suspended owing to the dire financial predicament of MGM studios. Recently MGM released data which pointed to the company’s dreadful financial situation. This certainly has investors worried – to the tune of billions of dollars – and the Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain tight-lipped. Good old Daniel Craig has been put on ice – temporarily – until a financial backer can provide the studio and funding for the project.

But Bond is resilient. That’s made perfectly clear by two of my favourite flicks in Moonraker and Casino Royale. If you think back to Moonraker you’ll likely remember Jaws (Richard Kiel as Mr Steel Jaws) and Roger Moore – the 80s era Bond actor who pulled off a stunning performance in this space odyssey flick. The film came out in 1979 and was a fascinating thrill-ride into action utopia. With exotic locales, high-wire balancing acts, expansive fight scenes and yes, casino gambling galore. Roger Moore’s star was only beginning to shine and this legendary actor produced yet another gem as secret agent 007. Take a look at Moonraker right here – preview. A word of advice: keep an open mind and remember that it was filmed in the 70s when films had but a fraction of the digital effects firepower that we have today. Nonetheless, it’s a worthy recipient of the 007 players’ choice flicks.

Fast forwarding to Casino Royale in 2006 and Bond is at it again. This time however, he’s played by the rugged and rough-around-the-edges Daniel Craig. Casino Royale is about a massive poker tournament being contested by Le Chiffre – a mob banker and of course James Bond 00. He has been requested by M to take out the enemy operation by beating Le Chiffre at a high-stakes poker game. There are beautiful women, dazzling action sequences (especially the opening 15 minutes) and stylish card playing. As far as latter-day Bond flicks and casino movies go – Casino Royale is arguably the very best of them.

The film 21 ranks among the very finest casino movies
There is one movie that goes toe-to-toe with Casino Royale – every step of the way though. It’s about blackjack card counting. And yes, the name of the flick is 21. 21 Film is about a group of brilliant students from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) who embark on a card-counting expedition into Las Vegas casinos (the real story took place in Atlantic City). These dudes win mega-loot before they are drawn and quartered – so to speak. It’s superb viewing entertainment and the mathematical genius of these fellas is a spectacle to behold. For casino-themed flicks, these 3 will raise the roof – enjoy the lot ☺.
